Cosplay: The Series (S2, Episode 12 review)

Episode 12 is another plot skipper that seemed to wipe everything off episode 11's plate.

The episode begins with Annisa, Mel and Bel driving to Anya's place for a friendly sick visit. The In-car conversation also informs us about Vincent's disappearance ever since episode 10 which I suspect might pave a twist to the later story. One question though, how old are high schoolers in Indonesia ? Are they legal to drive at that age o.O?

The 3 girls then reached Anya's home and had a short talk with Anya's mom while waiting for Anya to wake up. As you could tell, this episode focus on Anya's past and I won't lie, I cried at this part.

Anya's mom went on to talk about Anya's pitiful childhood which was plagued with a weak constitution and lots of school bullying. I don't want to go into details and spoil the story for you but the whole talk about “is reading manga really such a sin, mommy?” really struck a chord in me. Too often, Anime, manga and cosplay lovers have to fight with the mainstream society just to be accepted and respected for liking what they like. And I bet I’m not the only cosplayer who would feel attached to Anya’s story.

The story ends with Annisa getting a sudden call that informs of the disappearance of Panda! The new green haired girl who had refused to bow down to the rule of the new headmaster is missing ever since being called to the Teacher’s Lounge.

Overall, this would have to be my favourite episode ever. I’ve mentioned before that character development and a series that shows the raw conflicts and emotion of Cosplay is what I’m looking forward to. I’m glad with Anya’s story, they showed it.

Cosplay: The Series (S2, Episode 11 review)

Episode 11 comes back with the introduction of a cute and highly mysterious green haired character named Panda.
The story begins with the leaving of headmistress Katrina and her encouraging Sukma and Vincent to put aside their differences.

The scene then cuts to Ocha and Enka casually asking the outlandishly green haired Panda how she got transferred into the school. And all the answers they got just adds on to more mystery! Their conversation is cut short when the school is suddenly invaded by the walking dead! And before you know it, our Q-Cosushinkai members have all henshin-ed into
'High School of the Dead'  characters and is stuck in a zombie attack.

Once again, my favourite actor, Sukma jumps into the scene and hits the first shot. The CGI effect in this scene was fabulously done with a combination of dramatic Slow-Mo and gushing blood. Got to love how cool they made them look. My only tinnnnnnnnnny nitpick would be the slight choreography error that Annisa and Enka were obviously hitting bare air. I’m anal, I know. But hey, they still looked cool no?

Episode 11 has got to be the most 'Eeh!?' episode by far. With the sudden introduction of zombies and blood gushing scenes that makes one scratch their head in disbelief. My jaws dropped even further when a very suspiciously masked Headmaster was introduced at the end while the teacher acted like a zombie attack was just another day at school.

I guess this episode is paving way for a big twist in both the storyline and story telling method. I’m thinking Gintama, what do you think? Do you like the new style? Leave a comment and share your thoughts!

Top reasons why I don’t cosplay at events

Been wanting to talk about this for a while but never got around to it. And I didn't even realise it until someone left me a message on Deviantart asking me Do you go to local events?”. Was really taken aback by that question since I always try to cover as many events as I can.

Then I realise, it's not my participation but my cosplaying at the event! Yes, without my conscious knowing, I've stopped cosplaying at events save a few big ones for very long. And It's especially true this year as I had to miss Cosfest for some personal matters.

After such a long prequel, what I want to talk about, really, is why I've stopped cosplaying at events. To set the record straight, I'm not consciously doing it !

1. Lack of space for changing & makeup

Not sure about you but I personally don't enjoy squeezing with 30 other random girl in a single toilet. Lack of changing area for cosplayers is not a new problem here but it's one I never seem to get over. my last experience at SOY'C was horrifying. The toilet was badly ventilated and I felt like I was steaming inside, literally.

And when I went for the event that was screening May'n the Movie. I had to share a single disabled cubicle with 3 other friends. Not fun.

2. Lack of baggage storage
Again, another old problem. Cosplayers with our big costumes and props very obviously have a lot of baggages.

This is what I brought when I cosplayed Haruhi at STGCC. I find it hard to comprehend why a simple school girl cosplay have so much baggage to lug along. But the fact remains that I do have and usually when I cosplay, I have no choice but to leave it aside.Singapore’s well known for her safe environment but I still don’t think leaving your valuables lying around is wise.328064_241324285909605_213974638644570_642524_1014646_o
3. Too much random passerbys
You probably think I'm saying this because I usually cosplay girls and I'm afraid of pervy males. Partly true. But the bigger issue is the sardine pack lack of space! Not only does that gives you lesser walking space, it also gives you lesser photography area. Meaning to say all your event photos have sh*tloads of people behind.

P1150092

And because so much non Animanga/game attendees are participating in the event, the event becomes less appealing to me. Because I know I'll be exposed to a lot of random people who don't understand, don't appreciate and possibly even condescend this hobby.

I feel like I'm exposing myself to possibly unhappy situations (overhearing their distasteful comments etc.) and I subconsciously try to avoid that .

4. Random Pervy males
Because it's annoying and scary. Thankfully for me, I don't have much sexual appeal so I don't get as much unwanted attention. But I've heard way too many scary experience from fellow cosplayers to take things lightly.

One of the comments from my previous entry speaks of how many random Event attendees like to touch the cosplayer's when they take a photo together. Have this happened to any of you before?

Pervy Sage by ~Minato-117 (obviously this guys is a cosplayer himself and not a random pervy passer-by lols. But he did a really good pervy look no XD? No insults to him hokay! )

Personally, the really annoying notion is the understanding that they are there not for Animanga but for the babes. And I feel frustrated to be 'feeding' that demand.

    5. I can't cover the event

As you guys know, I run this blog (duh) and I cover events to share with you guys. I learnt the hard way that if you want to cosplay, your ability to cover and enjoy the event will be highly compromised.

Firstly you'll have to either lug your belongings along as you snake the crowd or you have no choice but to leave it lying around and pray it doesn't get stolen. 331213_2284762931902_1633743014_32291624_831208429_o

Secondly, when you're in costume, more often than not your mobility is restricted. It will be a challenge to even reach the end of the alley much less cover the event. If you're wearing a huge costume with big parts jutting out then it's wiser to just stay in one corner.

I don't usually wear bulky costumes hence I have one less worry. But what I do encounter is getting stopped for pictures so much that reaching the end of the alley without delay is impossible. (disclaimer: I am in no ways implying I am popular. I'm not)

I really try my best to be nice and accommodate every request I get because I like to believe they are fans of the series too. But the scary thing that happens next is the photographer's wall that builds up simply because everyone likes free stuff! Not because they like your series or think your cosplay is good, but because they happened to be there with a camera so why not snap this willing subject since she/he is already posing?

And before you know it, 5 minutes, gone.

    6. Photographs ? What photographs?

Not only do I spend a substantial amount of time posing for other people's camera, I also have to deal with the fact that I'm probably never going to see 98% of them, ever!

And that’s on top of the worry that someone’s gonna snap an awful picture of me to point fingers and judge critically with their friends.

I'm not exactly the most comfortable in front of a camera and it takes perking myself up to work the camera. After all the work of rushing your costume, doing your makeup and putting in effort to posing in front of the camera, you'd definitely want to see the results right?

I'm not trying to be mean or bitchy and I can sugar coat my words if I want. But the fact remains that, all my hard work is reduced to mere event entertainment. Free Mascot and crowd pleaser.

    7. Commercialism

In the past, when the local Cosplay & Animanga community was budding, this arrangement seemed fine with most of us. We didn't mind paying to attend the events and having our pictures taken by random person because we cherished the little chance we get to mingle with like minded fans. And most of us don't own a camera anyway, so it was our only way of getting a photo memory back.

But now, I personally feel less enthusiastic about it because I know for a fact that commercial entities are using Cosplayers as a selling point.

Hey, I'm all for commercialism , Commercialism IS essential for growth.

But what I detest is blatant exploitation and poor treatment. I'm not dropping names or blaming any organisation because the fact is, it's a dog eat dog world out there. It's only politically correct for a businessman to think business so I don't feel I have the right to judge that. The only thing I can do is not involve myself in it if I don’t feel up to it.

    ************************

I'm not saying it's bad to cosplay at an event and neither am I'm implying that all event organisers are the big bad wolf. There are many well organised events that make paying for it worthwhile and of course, taking part in an event is like joining a Matsuri/Festival. It's for the fun and getting together and all the memory weaving!

Zakuro (62) Random photo is random Open-mouthed smile

What I'm doing is just listing out my honest opinion on the Cons of cosplaying in a public place and encouraging cosplayers to rationalise and possibly, set their own expectations right before getting disappointed. Hopefully, some event organisers will also chance upon this entry and have an insight into what the event attendees want.

And ironically, I’ll be cosplaying both days at AFA 2011. See you guy there!

Not promoting Cosplayer pacifying BTW =)

Last Exile: Fam, The Silver Wing (Episode 2 review)

Episode picked up right where it ended off previously. Fam and Giselle were tasked to escort Princess Millia back to the capital Iglesia while Lilianna and the rest stayed behind to tackle the Ades Federation.

    image

The first half of the episode went at a much more comfortable pace as compared to episode 1 and I really thank the producers for taking time to build and develop the characters, namely Fam, Millia and Gisele. Time and attention was also given to allow the viewers to seep into the gravity of the invasion with scenes of the Turian citizens crowding at the train Station to escape.

    imageimage

It was touching to see the impetuous and slightly annoying Princess Millia quick to rise up to her role as a leader and bearer of hope for the nation. The scene with the weak King of Turian was also delicately treated and seemed to trigger an internal development in simple minded Fam.

I don’t know about you, but I find beauty in a weak man staying strong for someone else. The whole emphasise on the ‘last Princess as a beacon of Hope for the nation’  theme though old fashioned, was realistically weaved and successful in allowing the viewers to feel for the characters.

The plan for Lasas, the flagship of Turian and Lilianna was to stay stealth and hide away in the clouds while waiting for a chance to crash head on into the Impetuous (Flagship of the Ades Federation). A pretty suicidal and naïve strategy if you ask me but I guess with their situation and inept armed forces, this was their only choice.

Unfortunately for them, their tracks was quickly exposed and Luscinia signalled to dispatch Alauda to tackle them. When Alauda faded into the shadow ninja style, I was all like “ Whatthefish ?! You send a SINGLE man after an entire battleship?! You have cannons no?!?!?!?

    image

The scene then cuts to Lilianna giving out directions like the dignified Princess she was, all crew prepared to crash head on to sink the enemy vessel. The Lasas turns and accelerates full speed towards the general's battleship.

    imageimageimageimage

The artwork for the battle scenes was stunningly beautiful as usual. The realistic 3D vessels coupled with the amazing clouds in sunset colour tones were examples of perfection.

    imageimageimageimage

The battle scene in this part took me a while to appreciate but when I did eventually get into the correct mood, I found the BGM so hauntingly beautiful. Somehow reminisce of Studio Ghilbi.

The mood of the music shifts to fit the scene and did a fabulous job in wrapping the audience into the plot. Then it finally got to me, the battle strategy was really, a suicide.

    imageimage

The wonderful CGI of the battleships crossing fire, coupled with the sorrowful BGM and the realisation of the Turian Army’s grand suicide attack was an emotional moment that I once again, thank the producers for taking the time to develop.

    imageimage

Everyone held their breath nervously and focused their sight on the anticipated collision and at that very crucial moment, the vessel suddenly geared off track and narrowly missed the enemy.

    image

Just as the Sky Pirates were going “WHUT?! What is Lasas doing?!”, the scene cuts to the interior of the craft. All solders down and Lilianna gone.

Dio, sensing something amissed, flew towards the craft only to see all the soldiers dead and on the deck of the vessel is Lilianna limp in Alauda’s arms.

    imageimage

It was a pretty disturbing moment for me because I think I “Kya-ed<3” a little at how dashing Alauda looked =x. Had to consciously remind myself he is a despicable kidnapper =x

    imageimage

Before Dio could do anything, Alauda did an anti gravity leap and takes off with Lilianna. That moment made my jaws drop and seemed to pave way for what was coming.

Dio then flew to inform Fam and gang about the kidnap and Millia begged little sky pirate Fam to save Lilianna. What came on next was like a flying scene from “How to Train your Dragon” and “AVATAR”. It was an exhilarating ride showing Fam, Giselle and Millia crashing into the Ades Federation's Commanding craft through the cracks of their rotary propeller and watching their Vespa zipping through the many wheels in the motor.

    imageimage

That was one scene I felt both excited and disappointed with. The animation quality were good as usual but the camera angle in this scene appeared flat and didn't do the flight justice. It would have been so much more awesome if more dynamic angles were employed along with a more upbeat or groovable BGM.

    image

After some hiccups, Giselle the intellectual managed to find the blueprint of the craft and routed a pave that brought them crashing straight into the central command core of the vessel. Right in front of Luscinia, the Premier of Ades federation.

    imageimage

It was another scene of extreme emotion. I was so torn between want to cheer for the heroism of the trio and wanting to slam my face into my keyboard. It was like *Palms*. Someone should teach them something about stealth

So Fam, Giselle and Millia faced off Luscinia with Millia pointing a gun at he’s head and screaming for the return of Lillianna. And before you know it, Lilianna appears in the background with Alauda. I would also note that it appears she found time to change into a sexy low cut empire dress amidst all this commotion. I find amusement in guessing who helped her prepared that dress XD

    image

The episode pushes into it's final climax when Millia tries to kill Luscinia and the later begun chanting a poem that triggered a protective force field while eroding the entire bullet away. And the one in the middle of this blue mysterious force field, is Lilianna herself.

I swear my eyes popped out of it's socket when I saw the bullet going in slow –mo and Lilianna levitating. Truth be told, I wasn't expecting any Sci-Fi element for the series. I thought it was all going to be oil and grease and good old steam engines D:!

     imageimage

The force field rapidly expands and destroys whatever it comes in contact with. Left with no choice, Giselle and Millia powered the Vespa to escape while shouting out to Fam who was in a daze. Fam our heroine quickly got her nerves back and did a beautiful jump back into the Vespa.

It appears Princess Lilianna might be hiding something as her outburst triggers not just the force field but the 'Exile'. A huge slab of Unverified Flying Object that looked bigger than their castle and shoots out spear like things when attacked.

    imageimage

This is the part where a non-follower (me) of the previous instalment (Last Exile) feels a little left out. Because Dio obviously knew what that thing was and capable of doing as he shouted desperately for the soldiers of Turian Kingdom to cease fire against it. Sadly, his voice didn't managed to reach them in time and the Turian Army, without their leader chose to open fire at the massive enemy in front of them.

That action spelt the downfall and massacre of the entire kingdom as the Exile shoots out countless spear like weapons, smashing the capital into a pool of blood.

Overall, episode 2 was pretty much what i was looking forward to; progression in the story and character development. I also love the dynamic angles and movie like cinematography. It appears that as the story progresses, the producers intend to let the side characters have more limelight and vie for attention, which is just as well.

The final scene was heartbreaking and makes me wonder how Millia and Fam will take to the whole downturn. Shall look forward to episode 3!
